Reading is a situation where too much is never enough. Great post! If you haven't read The Weird Sisters yet you should check it out. It was entertaining and full of great lines, including an interaction between one of the sisters and a guy she dumps because of his attitude toward her reading.

Just discovered your blog today, and have been on it for the last hour. Love it!

I especially like this one. I was hyperactive until the age of 4, when I learned to read (Thank You Montessori!), and became hyper-book-active, a traveller in worlds of invention, and feeling like my real life exists among all the people in the world who loved the same books.

I'm still working out what bone I'll chew, digest, and cook up in various ways for my blog, but your posts are helping there.

Thanks!

Great post. I am a compulsive reader, although I won't deny less so since being a *eugh* grown-up. An interesting fact, by the by, reading is (a study has proven) the single indicator of whether a child will move up the economic scale. Incredible. Although I've YET to move up the economic scale.
Great blog. I'm working my way through it - hey, YOU'RE the reason I'm not reading books any more. Kidding....

This is AMAZING ... and so true. I am one of those obsessive readers. Right now I'm writing about 4 hours a day in addition 2 my two jobs and my schoolwork, and I am still reading about 2-3 books a week on top of that. I think it's safe to say that I, like you, love fiction.

Thanks for letting a fellow addict know that he's not alone in this world! You're right - we are a rare breed, and to know of another's existence is great joy!

My aunt remembers me as the 8 year old kid who would go to her house, ignore all the relatives and cousins, sit down in front of her bookshelf and start reading. I faintly remember that bookshelf, and I remember reading the entire bookshelf... a few times. I still have difficulty putting good novels down, and read through meals, while walking - I'd read while in the shower if they ever mass produced water-proof books!

I'm still much the same, except that I have switched to Google Reader to feed the obsession. Serendipity happens, because my best friend - who happens to be an obsessive reader himself - was wondering out loud why there are obsessive readers such as us. Thanks for providing part of the answer in this article!

oh my, I relate all to well to the teacher who thought that you, as an early reader, were faking.

My second grade teacher wanted to put me in the 'slow' reading group, because when called on in reading class, I could never just pick up where the last student left off. My mother knew very well that I was reading books the my father (who was a school librarian at a junior high) brought home. So she snuck into the back of my class one day and caught me with the top of my desk cracked open a bit - reading a Nancy Drew mystery 'undercover'. By the next year, we had a self paced K-12 reading ciriculum and after I finished all of it before Christmas, the teacher just let me turn in two book reports a week LOL.

"Drug of choice" indeed. I lift my glass to a fellow addict - and I'm going to stop by the local book box store and see if I can find your work. They sound interesting.

Are you a fan of movies, or rather a patron of cinema? It's clear how reading a large volume of written word affects one's writing, but how does the moving picture affects writing?
